50 Years International Film Festival Würzburg

Retrospective ’74

Welcome to a journey back in time to 1974 and back to today!

To celebrate our milestone birthday, we are taking you on a journey through the various decades of our history – and the last fifty years of film history in general! Where will we go first? To where it all began, of course …

Exactly 50 years ago, from January 25 to 27, 1974, the first film festival took place in Wuerzburg at the City-Kino – a program with a total of 11 screenings. Admission cost 4.10 DM for one film, the season ticket for all eleven films 10 DM 30 Pf.

In addition to a block of short films, experimental films, documentaries with social and economic themes and a few feature films were shown, including LA MAMAN ET LA PUTAIN by Jean Eustache, a dialog film in the original French version lasting over three hours. Many of the directors were present, so that the dialog between filmmakers and audience was a trademark of the International Film Festival from the very beginning.

Most of the films shown at the time are no longer available. We are therefore all the more pleased to be able to show three of these films in a small retrospective.

Admission to the “Retrospective ’74” is free, but you will need a ticket, which you can obtain free of charge from the box office in the Maschinenhaus.
