„Saaraba“ nennt man in Westafrika das verheißene Land - Europa. Der Film folgt fast ein Jahrzehnt lang dem Leben zweier Brüder von einer Fischerinsel vor Westafrika. Der Ältere, Aladji, schaffte es als Bootsflüchtling nach Spanien, aber den Status des Illegalen wird er seit Jahren nicht los. Der Jüngere, Souley, träumt von Europa und macht sich auf den beschwerlichen Weg zu seinem Bruder. Der Film zeigt die Erfahrungen und Hoffnungen derer, die in unseren Nachrichten fast immer nur pauschal „die Flüchtlinge“ genannt werden und gibt den Migranten ein Gesicht. Ein Perspektivwechsel mit einzigartigen Einblicken in eine andere Lebenswirklichkeit.

In West Africa they call it "Saaraba", the promised land, Europe. This longterm documentary shows the lives of brothers Aladji and Souley over the course of two decades. They are from a small island off the West African coast. The older brother Aladji manages to reach the vegetable plantations of Spain as a boat refugee, but he doesn't manage to shed the status of being an illegal immigrant. The younger brother Souley is dreaming of Europe and starts the arduous journey to join him. "Life Saaraba Illegal" shows experiences, dreams and desires of those who are generalized as "the refugees" in the news and gives them a voice. A fascinating change of perspective providing unique insights into a different reality of life.
