Japan, 1958. Nach einer Hochzeitsfeier sitzen der Brautvater Toshihiko Kawai, sein Freund, der erfolgreiche Unternehmer Wataru Hirayama und Heinosuke Horie zusammen. Hirayamas Tochter Setusko wäre nun an der Reihe zu heiraten. Ein Film über einen konservativen Vater und seine rebellische Tochter, die sich weigert, die Pläne zu akzeptieren, die ihre Eltern sich ausgedacht haben. Als eines Tages ein junger Mann namens Taniguchi in das Büro von Hirayamai marschiert und um die Hand seiner Tochter anhält, flippt der Unternehmer aus. In 1958, in the midst of his most productive cinematic period, Yasujiro Ozu made his first color film, the splendid Equinox Flower. Like so many of Ozu’s films, this poignant drama is about the subtly difficult emotional landscape navigated by parents and their grown children, yet it has an airiness of tone that sets it apart from his darker dramas of the period, such as Tokyo Story and Late Autumn. The film was shot in color (using the Agfacolor process), because the studio, Shochiku, had imposed it.
