Butterflies opens with Cemal – an astronaut who has been denied the opportunity to travel into space – raging against this deep injustice. His brother Kenan is an actor reduced to doing tacky voice jobs, and their teacher sister is in an unhappy marriage that she is trying to get out of. When they are summoned by their ailing father to return to their village, they reluctantly set off on a road trip. Along the way, they experience a bizarre series of encounters – which seem mild in comparison to the spontaneously exploding chickens, and the cleric questioning his faith, that they discover when they reach the village. Through these absurdities, the siblings must also rediscover each other, in this inventive and affecting film.
