Andreas Dresen
Andreas Dresen has been one of Germany’s most important filmmakers for over 30 years. He has won several Bavarian and German film awards as well as international prizes at film festivals such as Cannes, Chicago and Karlovy Vary and is equally popular with critics and audiences. What unites all his very different films is the loving portrayal of his characters. They are everyday people, passionate, tender, they make mistakes or get upset. They try to find happiness in small things or make big things happen, they take on their share of responsibility or learn to forgive themselves and others – Dresen’s films are never clichéd, and you won’t find any woodcut assignments according to the good-evil scheme. Rather, the films have something tongue-in-cheek and lighthearted about them – which is actually astonishing, as Dresen likes to tell stories about major historical events, such as the GDR and the time of reunification. The filmmaker, who comes from a Mecklenburg theater family, experienced both himself. In Wuerzburg, we are therefore showing four films, each of which deals with the subject in its own way.
Gundermann (Germany, 2018)
Stilles Land (Germany, 1992)
Als wir träumten (Germany, 2015)
In Liebe, Eure Hilde (Germany, 2024)
One film is STILLES LAND, which we also showed when Andreas Dresen visited the Wuerzburg Film Festival for the first time in 1999. It’s great that he’s coming to our festival again!
