Der amerikanische Musikwissenschaftler Alan Lomax spielte reiste 1951 nach Irland und begann, angeleitet von dem Musiker und Sänger Séamus Ennis, traditionelle irische Lieder und Musik aufzunehmen und zu sammeln. Diese Aufnahmen wurden als Album veröffentlicht und waren, neben traditionellen Musikstücken aus anderen Ländern auf Lomax' Reiseroute, Wegbereiter für die Wiederentdeckung der Volksmusik und der traditionellen Musik in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren. Declan McGraths Dokumentarfilm ist montiert aus Archivmaterial, atmosphärischen Landschaftsaufnahmen und Interviews mit zeitgenössischen Musikern und wird präsentiert von dem berühmten irischen Folkmusiker Pól Brennan (Clannad). Er zeigt uns den Mann, der als erster das aufgezeichnet hat, was wir heute als Weltmusik kennen.

Clannad’s Pól Brennan explores Texan song-collector Alan Lomax’s dream to save the music of the world and shows how that mission began in 1951 in Ireland. Lomax in Éirinn brings the viewer on a stunning journey as Pól follows Lomax’s life story through the Mississippi Delta, Washington, New York and along the west coast of Ireland. Lomax’s legacy is shown to be alive today with performances from Clannad, Steve Earle, Nell Ní Chróinín and Slow Moving Clouds. The result is a poetic and moving celebration of the value of traditional music not only in Ireland but throughout the world.
