Inhalt

Was war eigentlich vorgefallen?

Storyline

Head over heels, four sisters and their mother have to leave their paradise home in the free and prosperous Bahamas in the 1960s, to grow up in a thrifty and narrow-minded Switzerland. It happens so suddenly that the sisters are divided among foster families for lack of a house and money. What happened here? And how do they process it? Each of the sisters appears to have a very own version of events and therefore deals with them in a unique way. As in an exciting detective mystery, the story of this family's life is gradually unraveled.

I asked my family not to talk about the past before filming. Because of this I prevented their perspectives from influencing each other and being less dif-erent. With every family member I went through the same questions chronologically in two days. Unlike in a conversation where everyone wants the other person to understand him or her, in this film I have tried to open myself up as much as possible, without bringing in my own opinion and thoughts. I have given my family every opportunity to tell their story and to look for their underlying motivations and feelings. I did not tell my story until the end of the shooting days, by literally changing roles and answering their questions according to my perspective.
Directors’s statement, Sonja Wyss

Whilst the film is intended to be therapeutic and its happy ending implicit, this work is nonetheless significant for the courageous approach taken by the director towards such personal material; an approach which sidesteps displays of sentimentality and embarrassing showdowns so as to foreground pain in all its dignity.
Cineuropa, Roberto Oggiano
