Dublin 1979 and bra size is on the agenda. Puberty visits four best friends who attend the local catholic school – it’s about boys, boobs and bell bottoms. Maeve, almost 14, has just got her first, snow-white-coloured bra. Her pals, Ruth and Orla both already wear one, just Claire, being a staunch feminist, naturally does not. They`ve also already had a boyfriend, so this is something that she has to catch up with, too. She needs a guy with whom to learn how to kiss. Like the dashing, curly-haired 16-year-old heartthrob Brian. Who would have thought that sweet, quiet, unspectacularly pretty Maeve would snare him? But she seems to and to be with him, she starts neglecting school, her friends and responsibilities at home. The before unknown kissing, smoking and bunking off feel like much more fun.

Brian dumps Maeve in the local nightclub for a bustier girl, she's devastated; but the biggest blow comes when she's ostracised by her gang for having let them down when they needed her, and forbidden from leaving home by Dad. To cap it all, her new bra doesn’t even survive the first wash. With a defunct bra and a sconndrel for a boyfriend, Mave´s birthday could only be saved by her friends showing up in spite of everything...
