When Ed van der Elsken hears he has terminal prostate cancer, he only knows of one way to endure the coming agony: counterbalance his approaching death by making it tangible and using it as the objective of his work. The film „Bye“ is a self-portrait, i.e. that the sick main character and the filmmaker are one and the same. Ed van der Elsken speaks directly to the audience, angryly, desperately, but also with a sense of humour, authority and melancholy. What he offers to the specator is extremely revealing, touching and often torturing. Although sometimes he seems not to be up to his disease, he never becomes sentimental. The film ends with Ed van der Elskens philosophy of life: “Show, who you are!”
