Before turning to photography, Auerbach studied scultpure and drawing. In 1929 she started her apprenticeship in Berlin at Bauhaus photographer Walter Peterhans’ studio. Only shortly after that she set up her own successful photo studio “ringl + pit” together with Grete Stern. In 1933 Ellen Auerbach left Berlin and emigrated to the USA via Palestine and London. A large part of her photographs was taken during her several journeys, as for example to South America, Greek or Majorca. At the end of the 1950s she dedicated her life to a completely new area: to the therapy of children by education and learning , which she continued to do for 20 years. She died 30th of July 2004 at the age of 98 in New York.
